What is open, and when

Every day, the slot machines at the Charlottetown track come on at 11 a.m. From Sunday through Wednesday they stay on until 1 a.m., and from Thursday through Saturday until 2 a.m. This guide gives every hour in Atlantic time. Holidays can change the schedule, so the Kensington Road desk suggests a quick look at redshores.ca, the venue's own site.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the private Table Games room at the Kensington Road casino in Charlottetown opens at 12 p.m. From Monday through Thursday, its start moves to 4 p.m. Poker deals from 6 p.m. each Thursday and Friday and from 4 p.m. on Saturday, while roulette spins from 6 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The venue lists every table as running to close and gives no closing hour. For that reason, the cliff layers further down show tables open from their start time while the slots run, then as not published.

The cliff, cut open

Each layer is one part of the building, from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. of the day you pick. Colour means open; the hatched end with a question mark means "to close", a time nobody posts. Tap the cliff or drag the slider to move the crack.

When Red Shores Charlottetown Is Open

A racetrack first, then a casino

Start with the oval: the Charlottetown Driving Park was established in 1888. Harness racing has long been a major part of island heritage. The venue goes further and calls Prince Edward Island the Kentucky of Canada. Race dates are not in this guide, so check the racing pages of redshores.ca before you plan around a race night.

Red Shores Racetrack & Casino calls itself a year-round entertainment property in the heart of Charlottetown. You get live harness racing with a climate-controlled grandstand, plus a casino with slots and live table games. There is pari-mutuel betting too. A simulcast racing theatre and three on-site restaurants round it out. The address is 58 Kensington Road, attached to the Eastlink Centre.

What runs on which night

The casino floor has over 150 slots, both traditional reel slots and video slots. Table players head to the private Table Games room for Blackjack, Ultimate Texas Hold'em and Baccarat. Poker runs three evenings a week: Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Roulette keeps to the same three nights.

Racing from other tracks plays in the Simulcast Theatre, with pari-mutuel betting, every day from 11 a.m. to midnight. VLTs stand on the Summerside gaming floor, while Charlottetown lists no electronic table games, bingo or keno. The finder below lets you choose a game and shows the nights it runs.

Eating by the oval

O'Brien's Social Bar & Kitchen, on the lower level, is named for PEI resident and Hall of Fame horseman Joe O'Brien. It opens at 11 a.m., closing at 8 p.m. from Sunday to Wednesday and at 10 p.m. from Thursday to Saturday. Red's serves Italian-inspired comfort food in front of a 14-foot screen. From Sunday to Wednesday it runs 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and from Thursday to Saturday 11 a.m. to midnight.

Top of the Park is a three-tier dining room overlooking the historic track, with a Sunday brunch and a race-night buffet. Its hours are not posted, and neither are those of the Trackside Patio, the outdoor dining right beside the racetrack. Reservations are by phone only, at 902-620-4264.

Where can I eat then?

Pick a day and a time of day; the four kitchens by the oval answer for themselves. Bookings are by phone only, at 902-620-4264.

Getting to Kensington Road

The track sits inside the city at 58 Kensington Road, attached to the Eastlink Centre. Measured in a straight line from Charlottetown, Stratford is 3.5 km away, Montague 37 km, Summerside 54 km and Souris 69 km. Those distances run to the town points of OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors).

Measured across the Northumberland Strait, Moncton lies 130 km away and Halifax 180 km. Those are straight lines, not roads, and the strait makes the gap even wider. No driving times are estimated by the Kensington Road desk. Open Google Maps from your own starting point for the real road route.

The home stretch

Every town is a lane; the finish post on the right is Kensington Road. The further back a lane's marker sits, the longer the straight line to Charlottetown. Pick a lane for the figure and a road route.

Summerside

Road route in Google Maps

A straight line is not a road, least of all across the Northumberland Strait. Driving time is not estimated.

Finding Red Shores Charlottetown

At the door, and the card

  • The gaming floor is 19+, and no one under 19 may buy, play or redeem anything Atlantic Lottery runs.
  • Rewards Club membership costs nothing, and the desk in the casino asks for valid government-issued photo ID from people 19 or older.
  • Slots earn 1 point for every $2 played.
  • Casino Guest Services and the Rewards Club answer at 902-620-4266.

Online play on the island

On online play, the Kensington Road desk keeps it simple. On the island, Atlantic Lottery runs alc.ca, the provincially regulated site, for the PEI Lotteries Commission. Its 19+ rule is the same one applied on the Kensington Road gaming floor. Prince Edward Island grants private online casinos neither a licence nor a registration. The province's 2023 responsible gambling strategy says offshore online operators hold no authority over lottery programs in PEI, either to conduct or to manage them.

Charlottetown Casino by the Oval labels each of its home-page paid links Ad. Every one of them leads to one private online casino, the guide's sole partner, which pays the Kensington Road desk a commission and may later be replaced. The racetrack on Kensington Road, its operator and the province stand wholly apart from this partner, and none of the three pays the desk.

Where to find help

  • The PEI Gambling Support Line, 1-855-255-4255, is toll-free and confidential, and it stays staffed for all 24 hours of every day, all week.
  • Break in Play, the self-exclusion program of both Red Shores gaming floors, takes enrolment on site or through the PlayWise Advisors at 902-620-4267.
  • Once a break is confirmed it cannot be cancelled; it lasts 30 days, 60 days or 90 days, or a span in months: 6, 12, 24 or 36.
